Another first for NIEF – Youth leadership camp

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that we expose our youth to various social and educational activities within an Islamic ethos, NIEF (Nurul Islam Education Forum) embarked on taking the youth on a leadership camp, using: “Finding Myself as a Young Muslim” as the theme.

A group of 60 youth – ranging from between the ages of 10 -17, which included boys and girls were taken on a 3 day camp (on 15 - 17 February 2013).  The venue was the Van Der Westhuizen Hostel, in Strandfontein.  As this was a 1st for the community of Heideveld, it was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the parents and especially the youth.

With the Islamic ethos as our basis for this camp, our children observed every waqt with eager participation. They furthermore performed various other duties under the leadership of the NIEF members, who provided guidance and eargerly answered their questions. Those who showed initiative were rewarded for their efforts and motivated others to try as well.

We had several facilitators who taught our children many pertinent life skills.  These were mostly activity based, ranging from sand castle building to first aid to the human rights violations perpetrated in Palestine.  They did morning walks along the beach which included environmental education as well.  Our kids were actively involved and enjoyed every moment.

Our cabins’ setup was well structured in keeping the boys and girls separate. This was practiced in every way possible, including separate pool sessions for them as well.  I think the highlight of the camp, was the potjiekos competition.  The children were divided into five groups: each picked a recipe and was given all the ingredients to make their own meal. The group leaders then did the judging themselves and the winning group members were given novelty prizes. Each group then got to eat what they made and I can say with honesty it all tasted very good.

Though funding was a major struggle, we managed to obtain enough funds to make this a reality.  Alhamdulillah, we had some sponsors who donated unselfishly and generously in cash and kind.  These donations included some meals and a lovely goodie bag for each of the children.  Without their assistance this camp would not have been a success.

May Allah reward them abundantly, Ameen.

Youth Camp a great success

Salaam All

The Nurul Islam Youth Camp, held at the Van der Westhuizen Camp site in Strandfontein, was certainly a great success.  The children (aged 10 – 17 years) really had a wonderful time.   They enjoyed themselves with the programmes offered to them.  They also enjoyed the facilities at the site as well as along the beachfront.  The weekend of 15 – 17 February will certainly remain in their memories for many years to come.
We wish to thank all those who contributed towards the success of this milestone event in the lives of these young children from Heideveld.

Funds Needed towards Educational Camp for Heideveld Learners

Assalamu alaykum

We, the Nurul Islam Education Forum, hereby humbly request a donation towards funding our Initiatives.  Before we elaborate on these initiatives and future programmes, let me introduce ourselves.

The Nurul Islam Education Forum (NIEF) has been established for the purpose of improving the education levels amongst Muslim Youth in Heideveld. We are directly affiliated to the Nurul Islam mosque registered as the Heideveld Madrassah and Cultural Society (HMCS), working hand in hand with them in order to re-ignite the Islamic consciousness of the youth in the area.  NIEF comprise of energetic individuals  the majority of whom  are  educators,  teaching at various WCED and Islamic schools in Cape Town ,as well as  community members, the Imams and Committee members each  contributing  their wealth of experience in their varied fields of expertise. We all originate from Heideveld and surroundings and want to use this platform to plough back into our community.

Furthermore we are committed to continuously develop into a dynamic forum, promoting social cohesion through educationally enriching activities, whilst striving   towards becoming religiously progressive society.

One of our most recent accolades, taking into consideration that NIEF has only been existence for a few months is our first ever very successful Islamic Quiz held with the Madrassah learners recently.  The outcome has impressed the Editorial leadership of Muslim Views so much, that it made front page headlines with the title: Youth Inspire us All. A second article was published on page 3 of the (November 2012 issue) under the heading: What an Inspiration.  This has surely not only impacted positively on the youth but the community as a whole.

Our first initiative for 2013 is a youth leadership camp which will be held at Van Der Westhuizen Hostel situated in Strandfontein from the 15th to 17th February 2013. The cost of the camp is R10 000 hosting 60 youth.  We would therefore be very grateful for any donations toward the funding of the event.
